You might not be a superhero Geek to know what “Smallville” is about. A phenomenal TV series that started in 2001 featuring the life of Clark Kent, starting from his early high school years up till his work in the daily planet and fulfilling his destiny as the man of steel himself: Superman.
- The cast of Season 8
Superman could be the most popular and famous superhero in the whole world, of course we love many other heroes like Batman and Wonder Woman, but since the creation of Superman by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1938, the man of steel got so popular he even landed his own radio show in the 1950s.
The basic idea of Superman was to be a modern image of Hercules, a man who is capable of doing everything: He can fly, shoot fire from his eyes, super hearing, super speed, super strength … you get the idea, everything is super with Superman, but to make a distinction between what seemed to be “mutants” from Marvel comics, Superman was created to be an alien boy who was sent away from his decaying soon-to-be-destroyed planet “Krypton”, his little shuttle took him across the galaxies and landed him in a small American town namely “Smallville” to be later found and adopted by the loving Kent family, who got aware of his super powers and tried to protect him from any display of power in the outer world, years would go by, the little Clark would grow up to land a job in the famous newspaper of the major city Metropolis: The daily planet, working side by side with the notoriously energetic headlines-hunter: Lois Lane, his life is the savior of the planet begins with the suit his mother made him to disguise his true identity, she sewed the BIG S logo into his tights which was found in his shuttle.
We all know that, especially the ones who watched the amazing Superman films (1-4) and still remember the epic scene of Superman flying around the earth to reverse time and be able to save Lois, which was marvelous. “Smallville” TV series, on the other hand, happens in a parallel universe to the story of Superman we familiarly know, all elements are gathered in the series, but the story is re-written to expand over seasons, more dramatic and love affairs, and at many times, comic stories to break the ice a bit. Having said that, “Smallville” main story line was not Superman, it has always been Clark Kent and his day to day life, and what we have seen through the amazing 9 years of the show is how Clark grew up from a small town farm boy to a fully grown up serious reporter/savior.
One of the funniest and most ironic things to notice in “Smallville” is how in 9 long years no one said the “S” word, in one episode where Clark encounters the legion of superheroes from the future (Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy and Thunder Lad), Lighting lad gets too excited to see Clark and shouts “Hey, where is your suit?” and “Come on, do not run, FLY!”… Clark seemed too puzzled by those notations from the future, and then the Lighting Lad hits it “Your name in the future is super…” BAM! And then he was shut up by the righteous Cosmic Boy! “Super Dude!” he said, Clark dismissed all of that and went on to save the day from the evilness of Brainiac. Anyhow, the point is, no one ever said the word “Superman”, ever! It could have been a legal issue from DC comics, especially after the legal suitcase against DC from Joe and Jerry for the comic mogul, WB and DC comics won the case and they can use Superman as they want.
Still DC had their hands tied up when it came to inserting Batman and Wonder Woman into the show; they simply could not, because their franchises have their own legal issues that stop them from being featured in any other shows or films. (A new Batman film is being made, also a Wonder Woman film).
The “Smallville” fans have enjoyed the on-off relation between Clark and Lana at first few seasons, until Lana got so obnoxious that everybody was having an ulcer every time she appeared on TV! Then we moved to Lois, after long wait for the couple to fall in love, it took them few seasons of being close friends and for Lois to be running around with everybody else including the Green Arrow, finally Clark got the right gal in season 9, they are in love, not married yet, but in love. Hurray!
Season 9 ended up in a great manner:
- Clarks sacrificed himself for the sake of humanity, being killed by Zod with the blue Krytonite, the last shot showed Clark falling off the building.
- Clark received his Superman Suit from his mother.
- Clark had a dream before getting the suit that looks like a “Superman” revelation.
- Lois figures out that Clark is Superman.
- The Green Arrow is attacked and could have been killed, we’ve seen MORE than enough of Oliver in season 9, he is repulsive, keep him dead, or get him back and let him sit.
- Tess is kind of dead, but not dead, only half burnt, deformed as to speak, but “someone” brought her back to life.
- Chloe left, now, we love Chloe, although she does blink a lot, but she is a main pillar of the show, she even had her own side show for that matter “The Chronicle of Chloe” which is not very watchable anyway.
- The Justice League of America along with the Justice Society of America, they both signed off after fighting the Zod minions, declaring a final appearance maybe.
And then, in ComicCon 2010, the trailer of Season 10 surfaced, which is the last season of the series, sadly. Watching the trailer obsessively, feeling joy when the audience cheered when long-dead characters re-appeared, I’ve got apparent and clear hints:
- Clark is surely not dead, he comes back to life in the first episode called “Lazarus”, I think he will be brought back by Jor-El who mentioned something about Clark (Kal-El) fulfilling his biggest destiny and sacrificing himself for the sake of humanity, which he did, so he would get a “Mushroom” in return? Maybe extra bonus powers too? Like flying, please?
- Lois, as usual, going through other people’s stuff, she finds the suit, and at other shots when she is digging into Clark’s past in the “Torch” computer, she seems to have confirmed her doubts that Clark is surely the “Blur” (As Superman is badly called at the show).
- Tess is brought back, held somewhere, with a weird little child, who shows her Lex Luther and other beings in tubes, someone kept Lex alive and maybe cloning things?
- Lois is in an Arab country? Looking for something maybe.
- Perry White would be the chief editor, but no shots of him.
- Mr. Kent has an honorary appearance; it would be in a Clark’s dream.
- Also Mr. Luther Sr. has a very short shot, maybe a dream too? Well, the guy fell from the millionth floor, being pushed by his faithful son Lex.
- The “S” word is said! Lois said it, finally!
- The Daily Planet Globe is falling and Clark “flies” to the rescue, I hope it is not one of his super jumps; he must fly for real this last season.
- Chloe is still kissing Oliver, yikes!
- No clues on whom the bad guys are this season, it might be Brainiac though, all the Kryptonians from Season 9 went to Kryptonian Hell.
